Safety Checklist for Every 4WD Adventure
Heading off the beaten track in your 4WD is one of life’s greatest thrills, but with adventure comes responsibility. Whether you’re planning a quick weekend escape or tackling a remote outback expedition, safety should always be your top priority. To help you prepare for the unexpected and travel with confidence, we’ve put together the ultimate safety checklist for every 4WD adventure. From vehicle prep to essential gear and communication tools, this guide is designed to keep you, your passengers, and your rig safe, no matter where the tracks take you.
Vehicle Check Before You Leave
Before hitting the dirt, give your 4WD a thorough inspection. Key things to check include:
- Fluids: Top up engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, transmission and power steering fluid.
- Tyres: Check for adequate tread depth, sidewall damage and proper pressures (including your spare).
- Battery: Ensure it’s charged and securely mounted. Look for corrosion on terminals.
- Brakes: Listen for squeaks or grinding and ensure they’re responsive.
- Suspension: Look for worn shocks, loose bolts or sagging springs.
- Lights: Test all headlights, brake lights, indicators and driving lights.
- Windscreen & Wipers: Make sure your view is clear, and washer fluid is topped up.
If you’re heading remote, consider booking a professional pre-trip inspection, just for peace of mind.
Recovery Gear Essentials
Even the most experienced drivers get stuck occasionally. Be prepared with quality recovery gear suited to your vehicle and terrain:
- Snatch strap or recovery rope
- Rated shackles or soft shackles
- Recovery tracks
- High-lift or bottle jack
- Tyre deflator and compressor
- Shovel and gloves
Pack gear that’s compatible with your 4WD’s weight and keep everything easily accessible.
Tip: Visit Off Road Equipment’s recovery gear range to make sure you’re covered before your next trip.
Communication & Navigation
Staying connected and knowing where you are is crucial, especially in areas without mobile signal.
- UHF Radio: A must for convoy comms and calling for help on remote tracks.
- GPS Unit or Offline Maps: Don’t rely solely on mobile apps. Load topo maps in advance.
- PLB (Personal Locator Beacon) or satellite communicator for emergencies.
Know how to use your equipment before you go. Store important frequencies and emergency contacts.
Emergency & First Aid Supplies
Help might be hours (or days) away, so come prepared:
- First aid kit (with snake bite bandages and trauma items)
- Fire extinguisher
- Torch or headlamp with spare batteries
- Basic tools and spares (fuses, belts, radiator hose, coolant, etc.)
- Water purification tablets
Pack for the worst-case scenario. A broken ankle in the bush is very different to one in the suburbs.
Food, Water and Shelter
You never know when plans will change or if you’ll be stranded. Always carry:
- At least 10 litres of water per person, per day
- Non-perishable food for a couple of days minimum
- Emergency blankets or swags
- Shade (awning or tarp) and wet-weather gear
In hot Aussie conditions, dehydration can set in fast, always carry more water than you think you’ll need.
Let Someone Know Your Plans
Before heading off-grid:
- Share your trip itinerary with a friend or family member
- Include vehicle details and planned campsites
- Check in regularly, especially if travelling solo
In an emergency, having someone who knows where you should be can save crucial time.
Respect the Environment
Safety isn’t just about personal wellbeing, it’s about looking after the land too. Stick to marked tracks, leave no rubbish, and avoid driving on sensitive terrain.
No matter how short or familiar your trip, having a safety checklist helps reduce risks and boost your confidence out on the tracks. A bit of preparation goes a long way when things don’t go to plan.
