Top 5 Recommended Recovery Gear Items Every 4×4 Owner Should Carry

Heading off-road in Australia is one of life’s great experiences, from beach runs and bush trails to remote desert crossings. But as any seasoned 4WDer will tell you, getting bogged, stuck or stranded is not a matter of if, it’s a matter of when. That’s why carrying the right recovery gear is absolutely vital.

Recovery Boards (Traction Boards)

When you’re bogged in sand, mud or snow, recovery boards (often known as traction boards) can be your first and fastest way out.

They work by providing grip under your tyres when the surface is too loose or slippery. Just wedge them under the wheels and drive out slowly.

Recommended for:

  • Solo travellers
  • Beach driving (e.g., Lancelin)
  • Quick recovery without extra equipment

Snatch Strap

A snatch strap uses kinetic energy to recover a stuck vehicle, one of the most effective and popular off-road recovery methods. It stretches under load and then “snatches” the bogged 4WD out.

A good snatch strap kit should include:

  • Rated snatch strap
  • Bow shackles or soft shackles
  • Heavy-duty storage bag
  • Dampener for safety

Pro tip: Make sure both vehicles are rated and recovery points are secure before using.

Recovery Dampener

Often overlooked, a recovery dampener is a simple but essential safety item. It helps absorb energy and reduce the risk of a strap or cable whipping back dangerously if something fails during a recovery. It’s placed over the snatch strap, winch rope or recovery line to bring it to the ground safely if it breaks under load.

Shackles

You can’t connect a snatch strap or winch rope without proper recovery shackles. These are used to secure your gear to rated recovery points on your vehicle or another.

There are two main types:

  • Bow Shackles (Steel): Strong and reliable, just make sure they’re rated.
  • Soft Shackles (Synthetic): Lightweight, safe and quick to use. A great addition to any kit.

Winch

While not strictly “carry” gear in the same sense, a winch is one of the most important recovery tools for solo travellers, remote trips, and heavy vehicles. Winches allow self-recovery in serious situations, especially when there’s no one else around to help.

Other Handy Recovery Tools

While those five are our core recommendations, here are a few extras worth adding to your recovery kit:

  • Tyre deflator & compressor – adjust tyre pressure for different surfaces
  • Gloves – protect your hands during sharp or dirty recoveries
  • Shovel – for digging out when traction gear won’t cut it

Off-road recovery is all about being prepared, not being lucky. The right gear gives you the freedom to explore further, travel more safely, and recover from sticky situations without needing help.
